DIY Alternative Wedding/Bridal Registry Shower Gift Idea!

Image result for bride registering clip art

The wedding registry has received a huge makeover in the last decade. Couples no longer have to even visit a store to create a registry. They can do it while hanging out on the couch with laptops in hand and do the whole thing online. Couples also have options such as one registry that includes multiple stores, online registries that provide endless product options (e.g. Amazon) and even sites where couples can collect money in lieu of actual gifts to help them with date nights and their honeymoon fund. The latter options have become popular among couples who live together prior to the wedding who feel like they have all the household items they need already.

There is some debate over cash gifts and registry funds. Some guests and brides love them and some guests prefer physically picking out and buying a gift. What do you do if you have everything your household needs already but still want the registry experience and gift options?

I may have an alternative to offer you.

Your bridal party (with your input) can create milestone/everyday/date night baskets. The idea is that guests can buy items and gift cards to create baskets that give the couple practical things they need or even great dates or time together. Guests could choose a basket to create themselves or go in on a group basket. I have ideas for baskets posted below.

So the tricky part now is how to do you have people choose baskets and not repeat or buy duplicates? There is a FREE site called SignUpGenius I used it to make an example sign up for a bridal shower using the baskets below. It took me less than 10 minutes to pick a theme, create the sign up sheet and publish it. It is FREE!!!! You can simply include a link to the registry with instructions in the invitation for the shower. Here are some screen shots of the process and product from SignUpGenius which also allows you to make customizations and control the settings!

Here are some basket ideas. You don’t have to include all of these items in to the baskets. These are just some starter ideas! You may notice that a good bottle of wine can fit pretty much any theme!

Our Wedding Playlist- Ceremony and Reception Songs

My husband and I  both love music. My style is a mix of 50’s, 80’s, Disney and throw in some random club songs and 90’s rap. While he is consistent with classic rock…hard rock…screaming rock…angry rock…you get the idea. Planning the music for our big day was crucial. We wanted the songs to reflect us. We wanted a mixture of fun and goofy with touching and romantic. Ultimately my husband chose our first dance and we agreed on many more.  The end result was a soundtrack to our big day. I still listen to it constantly and I am transported back to that day. Whenever Clocks by Coldplay comes on the radio or 1,2,3,4 by the Plain White Tees, I get a little nostalgic!

My husband and I couldn’t afford a custom logo displayed in lights. We couldn’t pay for an ice sculpture. However for free…we could show our guests who we were through music. Below is a rundown of our song selections for inspiration. I follow up with some other tunes to consider for making your own soundtrack as a couple. I also have suggestions below on unique and special songs for your big day. For instance, The Vitamin String Quartet has beautiful instrumental versions of so many songs without that electronic karoake sound. You can listen to samples of all these songs either on the sidebar or at the end of this post! Enjoy!

Our Wedding Soundtrack circa 2009!

Family Entrance: God Only Knows What I Would Be Without You by the Beach Boys

Bridal Party Entrance: 1,2,3,4 by  The Plain White Tees

Bride’s Entrance (ahem me): Clocks by Coldplay

Unity Candle: There Is Love (The Wedding Song) by Peter, Paul and Mary…it’s traditional and it is soooooo good.

Procession Out: Beautiful Day by U2

Family Entrance: Pride (In the Name of Love) by U2

Bridal Party Entrance: I Wanna Rock by Twisted Sister (This was awesome!)

Bride and Groom Entrance: Hot for Teacher by Van Halen

Ceremony: My awesomely talented friend Katie Kraft played these songs live on guitar and piano while she sang. She is awesome. If you live in the Washington D.C. area…find her and Logan Kraft. They are awesome and you will love them!

Katie and Logan Kraft’s Web Site

First Dance: Echo by Trapt

Mother/Son: Song for My Son by Donna Lee Honeywell (country version)

Father/Daughter: Butterfly Fly Away by Miley and Billy Ray Cyrus (okay I saw the movie prior to the wedding and bawled at this part…I will own it…I love this song and I would do it again!)

Cake Cutting: Eat it by Weird Al Yankovic

Bouquet Toss: All the Single Ladies by Beyonce (not original but it had just come out…it had to be)

Garter: Whatta Man by Salt and Peppa and En Vogue

So those were our choices! There was rock, oldies, humor and yes even 90’s rap! We even played the theme from A Summer’s Place because it was my Aunt Reggie and Uncle Terry’s wedding song and they were celebrating their anniversary. The soundtrack of the day reflected us as a couple. Remember if you don’t have money to spend on over the top customizations, you still can add your touch as a couple to the music for your special day.

Affordable and Unique Vellum Table Number Idea!

I just found the seller Paperpixie on Etsy and I am obsessed! There are so many inexpensive wedding day customizations available at her Etsy Store. I was originally brought to the store because I saw the vellum table numbers. The table numbers sell for between$1.00- $2.25 each (some are a few cents more) and can be customized to your liking.

You can use the free tealights and tealight holders from your venue (many venues provide these for no extra charge) and then wrap the vellum around them for an inexpensive, EASY, time saving but high end customized look! Just be sure that the votive holder is higher than the tea light for safety reasons. You could easily frame one of these vellum wrappers after the big day or scrapbook it! There are a ton of options to go with any theme!

Here are some of my favorite vellum table number picks from The Paperpixie on Etsy!
